The Dombeya Scholarship

The Dombeya Scholarship is an award that aims to identify and sponsor outstanding South African graduate winemakers from disadvantaged backgrounds and to provide opportunities for them to work and study overseas.

In 2009, a graduate student from the University of Stellenbosch will travel to Australia to work vintage at Voyager Estate in Margaret River. Following this, he/she will spend a week of research in the Oenology Department of the University of Adelaide, and then will finish the Australian visit with a stint at Kaesler Wines in the Barossa Valley.

It is hoped that this initiative will identify future leaders and encourage students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds to seek a career in the wine industry.

Womens Day

August 9 is a significant date in South African history. On this day in 1956, 20 000 women marched in Pretoria in protest against repressions to their civil rights.

The day is now observed as a public holiday. The actions of these women were integral in initiating the changes that make South Africa the place it is today .

The first Dombeya Wines Womens Day event was held on August 8 in the Dombeya Wines cellar. It was such a great day that we are going to do it every year from here on, plus schedule a few other activities throughout the season.
