Fire in Stellenbosch
It has been a bad time for a lot of places around the world recently with regard to fire. Fortunately, we didn't suffer anything like the davastation and death that happened in Victoria, Australia, but our fires were no less real and concerning.
This picture was taken from our Chardonnay block, looking over Stellenzicht and up into the Helderberg range where the fires were raging. The night sky lit up like a beacon- it was as dramatic a scene as you could imagine. Perhaps Dante found inspiration in something similar.
The fire moved around the range, and came as close as our next door neighbour Bilton without actually threatening any of our vineyards. Sadly we've heard of a number of producers suffering vineyard losses, Tokara being of particular note.
We had a little smoke hang around for a day or so but things have cleared up now. There are reports of fires starting up again in Elgin, and we hope for their sake that they will be brought under control quickly.
