Disaster Down Under
Spare a thought at this moment for our friends in Australia. In an extraordinary couple of weeks, heatwave conditions have smashed yields from the 2009 vintage across a number of South Australian and Victorian regions.
Damage to the wine industry however pales into insignificance when compared to the horrible loss of life and property from the bushfires currently raging in the state of Victoria. Over 170 people have already lost their life. That is predicted to rise to up to 300 over the next week as emergency services workers make their way into new areas.
700 houses have been burnt to the ground. Farms, livestock, livelihoods and in fact whole towns have been wiped out. It is one of the worst natural disasters ever to hit Australia and our thoughts are with the people who are suffering through this dreadful time.
