On the Road with Dombeya- Durban

Tuesday I flew up to Durban to do a dinner tasting at a restaurant and to visit a couple of clients and possibly meet a couple of new clients that share the same passion for wine than we do.
When I landed at Durban international, I realised the last time I've been in Durban was 6 years ago and the only reason why this suddenly struck me was the heat and humidity when I got out of the plane. This always makes it interesting to see which will be the wines of choice in different parts of the country.

The owner and chef, Mornay of Hemingway's in Davenport Road - Glenwood is a very enthusiastic young man and quite shy on top of that, but boy he can cook up a storm. The menu was as follows,

Smoked salmon on sweet melon with dill and a dash of caviar accompanied by our Sauvignon Blanc. The choice because of the sweet passion fruit and lemon grass flavours picked up on the nose and palate of the wine.

Second course were skewers of succulent chicken cubes rolled in pistachio nuts and a dash of honey flamed grilled which gave an extra edge served with our Chardonnay 2007 choice, because of the silky softness of this wine with flavours of butter, honey, roast nuts and hints of apple and lemon, all flavours that make a good choice with chicken.

Main course was fillet of beef on potato mash with vegetables. The beef was grilled and then rolled in sesame seeds. This was served with our two red wines, Boulder Road Shiraz 2006 and the Samara 2005. The reason for the two choices is to play around with the different flavours in the wines and to show people how this could affect the flavour you experience with the food. Both these wines were a good choice with the meat and the preference was 50/50 by the guests.

It was a very successful evening and I thoroughly enjoyed myself with a very enthusiastic crowd of people that have passion for wine which shows in the amount of wine that we sold on the evening.
