Vintage 2009- It's here!

It's back! Vintage, that manic, exciting, exhausting, exhilirating, worrying, tiring, frantic but brilliant time of year is once again upon us.

Not quite in full swing just yet, but we've got the ball rolling by picking some Chardonnay for sparkling wine production, which we pick whilst the acidity is still quite high as we want those fresh, citrus-like acids to underpin the richer, creamier flavours that develop from time spent on lees ( dead yeast cells) after fermentation.

Last year we really stretched the cellar to its full capacity, with a lot of fruit ripening at the same time and with ferments running in all corners of the cellar. What made it even tougher was that it was a difficult vintage to make calls in, because the rain that kept coming intermitently created a few disease issues in the vineyard which meant that we had to be very vigilant about when the fruit was harvested.

Thankfully, we got through it without too many issues and the quality turned out to be very good. Without wanting to hex ourself, 2008 and the leadup to the 2009 vintage has been a terrific season for growing grapes and if we can get through February and March without any really nasty weather then the 2009 vintage will indeed be a memorable one for wine quality.

We will be reporting regularly on vintage here on the Dombeya Wines blog, and also posting thoughts and chatting to anyone who wants to pop by on our Facebook page.

'Hope you can join us for a read and a chat'.
