Talking Wine

The Door to China

Valuable research from the AWRI (Australian Wine and Research Institute) has just been published on the taste preferences of Chinese consumers.

If there is one market that has everyone in the wine trade fascinated at the moment it is China. The worlds most populous country has massive potential for growth with regard to wine, and in times of decreasing consumption in other mature markets the possibilities here are quite salivating.

What is interesting about this study is that there is a strong preference amongst wine drinkers already familiar with red wine for wines that are fruity and even a little sweet. In fact, when tasted against an array of wines that included highly regarded (prestigious) French wines, the preference amongst a study group of over 300 consumers came out in favour of the richer style of wine represented by the Australian labels.

This is certainly food for thought, and a good starting point for South Africa given that our wine styles aren't really that far apart from Australia.
