Biodiversity vs Wine
A thoughtful and passionate article by WOSA CEO Sue Birch on the wine.co.za website, looking ahead to what the SA wine world will be like by 2018.

WOSA have planned their marketing program around the bio- diversity based slogan, "Variety is in our nature." It's a clever, creative slant on trying to engage a section of the wine drinking world who are, or will be, increasingly concerned with the image of wine and its connection to nature and sustainability.
It has been presented well, and there is no doubt that this is a growing section of the market. However, it removes the focus from wine quality and in many key markets this is still an aspect of South African wine which remains largely unproven in the eyes of key consumers. Is it a diversion from the real task of affirming that South Africa has the capacity to make world class wine, or even great value for money wine?
There are plenty of people out there in the winelands who think that we can, and do make such wine, but we havn't as yet been able to convince some doubters that this is the case.
It poses quite an interesting question that has been debated in depth, yet rarely publicly. Is the marketing program devised by WOSA (Wines of South Africa) the best way to promote the South African industry to the world? Feel free to post your thoughts here.
